Top places to visit in the Yorkshire Dales this summer

Let’s look at the region’s essential sights and hidden gems – each offering a different flavour of the Dales, all accessible as day trips from Leeds or longer explorations from your base at Weetwood Hall. Here are some of our favourite places to visit in the Yorkshire Dales, whether you arrive by car or enjoy the Leeds to Yorkshire Dales train.

Malham Cove and Malham Tarn: Iconic walks and rare tranquility

Start with two of the Dales’ most celebrated natural landmarks: Malham Cove and nearby Malham Tarn. The Cove is an immense curving amphitheatre of pale limestone, beloved for its dramatic cliff face and geological uniqueness. It’s the ideal summer destination for walkers looking for a manageable yet rewarding trail. The stepped path up the cliff affords panoramic views over the North Yorkshire Dales, and keen birdwatchers often glimpse peregrine falcons nesting on the ledges.

Just a short walk further, Malham Tarn presents a contrast: a serene, high-altitude freshwater lake, edged with meadows and ancient woodland. It’s a peaceful place for a picnic, with easy, accessible walking paths. For those seeking a relaxing break from business travel or a family-friendly outing, the area around the Tarn is refreshingly uncrowded, letting you unwind among dragonflies and water voles.

Ribblehead Viaduct: Majestic engineering and moorland views

No Yorkshire Dales itinerary is complete without witnessing the majesty of Ribblehead Viaduct. This Victorian railway structure sweeps across the moor at the base of the Three Peaks, with 24 graceful arches standing defiantly against Yorkshire skies. It’s a top spot for railway enthusiasts and photographers alike. Even better, it’s a key point on the Leeds to Yorkshire Dales train route. Step off at Ribblehead station for immediate access to long-distance footpaths, or simply enjoy the view with a flask of tea beside the tracks. The open moorland here is perfect for peaceful contemplation or a bracing morning walk before heading back to comfort at Weetwood Hall.

Skipton Castle and the gates to the Dales

For visitors who wish to balance natural beauty with fascinating history, Skipton Castle offers one of England’s best-preserved medieval fortresses. Located in the bustling town that signals your entry to the Yorkshire Dales from Leeds, Skipton is an excellent first stop on your itinerary. The castle’s towers and dungeons are open for discovery, and families with children will enjoy interactive trails that bring the centuries to life. The town itself has a lively market and excellent cafes. Come in summer, and the atmosphere is festive, with independent shops and boat rides along the canal. Skipton makes a stellar base for planning additional places to visit in the North Yorkshire Dales, but also works beautifully as a half-day trip before returning to city comforts.

Aysgarth Falls: A classic Dales waterside escape

Whether you’re seeking gentle adventure or an accessible outdoor spot for a group, Aysgarth Falls is hard to beat. The triple cascading waterfalls along the River Ure are surrounded by leafy paths and broad picnic lawns. It suits nearly all ages and fitness levels, so it’s a reliable choice for business guests with limited time or families on a relaxed weekend from Leeds hotels. Summer brings the sound of water over stones, kingfishers darting along the banks, and wildflowers bordering every path. Set aside time for lunch at a local tearoom, then take a stroll to the upper and lower falls before heading back to Weetwood Hall for evening dining.

Hawes: Market town hospitality and the taste of Wensleydale

One of the most appealing towns at the heart of the Yorkshire Dales is Hawes. It’s a timeless base for explorers but also a lovely day out if you’re short on time. The high street is lined with stone cottages, independent shops, and welcoming cafes – perfect for picking up local cheese or handmade crafts. Walkers are spoilt for choice: gentle riverside strolls, challenging upland circuits, or the famous trek to Hardraw Force waterfall. For business guests, Hawes is a chance to swap the bustle of Leeds for a day of peaceful networking, local food, or simply a pause with good coffee.

Grassington: Summer village charm and river walks

If you fancy a classic English village summer, Grassington will delight with its cobbled square, brightly-painted shopfronts, and lively seasonal festivals. Many travellers find it one of the most picturesque places to visit in the Yorkshire Dales. It’s an excellent spot for a Leeds day out – especially during the annual arts festival or the summer craft markets. Around the village, riverside walking paths meander towards Linton Falls, offering gentle exercise and marvellous picnic stops. Grassington balances rural peace with a touch of culture, suiting both leisure and business guests alike.

Best Hotel I have stayed at in Leeds!

I have been staying in Leeds for over 20 years and have tried a huge cross section including all of the major chain hotels. This week I tried the 4 star Weetwood. Having had two daughters at Leeds University over the last 10 years visits to Leeds, both on business and for family have been many.

I booked directly with the hotel which was quick and simple. On arriving at the hotel there was ample and free parking(not the case with a lot of Leeds hotels) Check-in was quick and simple and I had been selected as “Guest of the Day” this meant a free upgrade to a superior room, a welcome note in the room, a large bowl of fruit, and a Pod coffee making machine.

Room was excellent and very spacious, bathroom modern warm and dry. We decided to eat in the restaurant. As guest of the day we were given our first drink with compliments of the house.

Dinner was excellent with complimentary breads and water. Excellent, food, service, ambiance. Breakfast was equally as good with an extensive choice of fresh fruits, pastries eggs cooked to order you could not fault it.

I can’t believe I have spent so many nights in Leeds and not stayed at the Weetwood! Mid range price for a luxury hotel in Leeds.
