How the Otley Run became a Leeds tradition

The Otley Run began as a quiet tradition among students and academics, thanks to its close proximity to the University of Leeds and accommodation at Weetwood Hall. Decades ago, the journey started in Otley, a market town north of Leeds, with a handful of pub stops for real ale enthusiasts. Over time, the route shifted south towards Headingley and central Leeds, absorbing a vibrant mix of old locals, younger students, international visitors, and every generation in between.

Today, the Leeds Otley Run stands as a rite of passage, ranking among top Leeds attractions for visitors and locals. It’s famous for themed costumes, group camaraderie, and an ever-changing list of eclectic pubs and bars. Not only does it combine Yorkshire hospitality with city vibrancy, but it also intertwines history and nightlife on a route packed with atmospheric venues, hidden gems, and characterful stops.

Understanding the Otley Run route and etiquette

Though the full modern Otley Run route stretches up to 18 stops, most participants begin at the northern end of Headingley and wind down into Leeds city centre. The number of pubs you visit is flexible – ideal for both casual groups and ambitious crawl devotees. One of the joys of the Otley Run is its inclusivity, welcoming visitors looking for a memorable local experience and locals wanting to show off the best of their city.

You’ll find participants dressed up (themes are optional, but widely embraced), sharing rounds, and always respecting the city’s vibrant pub scene. Be courteous to bar staff and regulars alike, and remember the aim is a sociable experience rather than speed drinking. If you’re staying at Weetwood Hall, we recommend grouping with colleagues or friends, planning travel in advance, and making the hotel your convenient regroup point for business or leisure.

Best Hotel I have stayed at in Leeds!

I have been staying in Leeds for over 20 years and have tried a huge cross section including all of the major chain hotels. This week I tried the 4 star Weetwood. Having had two daughters at Leeds University over the last 10 years visits to Leeds, both on business and for family have been many.

I booked directly with the hotel which was quick and simple. On arriving at the hotel there was ample and free parking(not the case with a lot of Leeds hotels) Check-in was quick and simple and I had been selected as “Guest of the Day” this meant a free upgrade to a superior room, a welcome note in the room, a large bowl of fruit, and a Pod coffee making machine.

Room was excellent and very spacious, bathroom modern warm and dry. We decided to eat in the restaurant. As guest of the day we were given our first drink with compliments of the house.

Dinner was excellent with complimentary breads and water. Excellent, food, service, ambiance. Breakfast was equally as good with an extensive choice of fresh fruits, pastries eggs cooked to order you could not fault it.

I can’t believe I have spent so many nights in Leeds and not stayed at the Weetwood! Mid range price for a luxury hotel in Leeds.
